Last week marked the 12-month countdown to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, which will be hosted in the city next summer.

The milestone was celebrated with a free sports festival in Centenary Square – showcasing 12 of the sports and Para sports that will be contested as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, and with less than 365 days until the opening ceremony, the recruitment drive for Birmingham 2022 continues apace.

Gi Group UK, the Official Recruiter for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games has been bought on board to fill 1,200 roles for the Games. The huge undertaking has already seen over 31,500 applications, 2,000 candidates interviewed and more than 500 positions filled.  Over the next year we will be recruiting to approximately 650 roles– providing a great opportunity for people in the region to play a major part in the Games.

To celebrate the one year to go milestone, Paulo Canoa, CEO of Gi Group UK – himself a former professional basketball player – attended the festival where visitors were encouraged to try some of the Commonwealth Games sports for themselves. Attendees to the event had the opportunity to speak with a team of recruiters about the roles currently on offer, how to apply and how to register future interest.

Speaking at the festival, Paulo Canoa said:

“It is an extremely exciting time for Gi Group UK as we continue to fill vacancies for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. It is incredible to think that there is now just one year to go. This is a global Games offering local opportunities and attending the sports festival allowed us to speak with potential candidates from the region and experience first-hand the excitement that is building in the city for this fantastic celebration of sport.

“Birmingham is a great, culturally diverse and economically vibrant city and hosting the Games is already adding to that, particularly in the job opportunities it is providing. As Covid-19 restrictions ease and we enter the home straight with just 12 months to go, it is fantastic for myself and the Gi Group UK team to finally be able to engage with residents from across the region on the fantastic opportunities available.

“With the successful delivery of a project of this scale and scope so far, Gi Group UK has already demonstrated our expertise and recruitment capabilities. Now we are excited to enter the final phase as we look to secure the remaining roles from the local community, as we help to make the Games a great success and ensure its legacy.”

Ian Reid, CEO of Birmingham 2022 said: “Our team has grown significantly during the last year, and, with the help of Gi Group UK, we have been able to recruit hundreds of people virtually.

“The size of our workforce will need to double again over the next twelve months, as we continue to recruit at speed, and we are pleased to be providing employment opportunities to so many people during what has been a very challenging time, especially for the events sector.”
