WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING AN APPRENTICE?

Unlike university, when you have an apprenticeship you earn a salary whilst you learn (plus the apprenticeship training you receive is free!). University in comparison has yearly tuition fees starting at a circa £9,500, which is set to increase, plus accommodation fees. An apprenticeship means you won’t come out with any debt, meaning you will have a better credit rating.
Doing an apprenticeship gives you real workplace experience, and will direct you immediately onto the career ladder, giving you the chance to find out what is best for you. A university degree is 3 or 4 years long, and set in an academic environment which is not really akin to the average workplace. Your interests can change over the three year degree time period too, and you may come out of it feeling uninspired.
Those who go to university come out with a formal undergraduate qualification by the end (a Bachelor’s Degree), and apprentices also come out with a formal qualification. Apprenticeships save you a lot of money in the long run, even though both an apprenticeship and a degree produce professional qualifications – but only apprenticeship qualifications are free to individuals.
Businesses want to take on apprentices, because they are a big supporter of UK businesses. Employers often prefer their employees to have practical hands-on workplace experience rather than just a degree. A recent survey of 500 of the top firms in England even found that apprentices are 15% more employable compared to those with other qualifications.
NUS Apprentice extra provides discounts in-store and online at your favourite brands to help your hard earned cash go a little further. This has been created by the National Union of Students (NUS), and so the money we raise selling the discount card helps to fund the National Society for Apprentices, which will serve to represent your needs and those of all vocational learners.
For just £11 for 12 months, you get discounts from the likes of The Co-op, Amazon, Dominos, Alton Towers, New Look and much much more!

You can apply for an Apprenticeship all year round, whereas you can only apply for University once a year.
